Waterlilies at Giverny (1908) - Description

Claude Monet would paint water lilies over 250 times during his life. Monet installed his water lily pond in his garden at Giverny and tended to it for many years before becoming interested in it as a subject of painting. The lilies became the focus of much of his work during the final years of his life. Forty-eight of these paintings were shown in an exhibit in a gallery in Paris. All paintings had the same name, and were distinguishable through the use of color and perspective. "Water Lilies at Giverny" is a large painting in this series. The original is nearly 100 centimeters tall. The lower left of the canvas is a deep blue, covered with lilies. The water lightens to a turquoise as the viewer looks up the canvas, where more lilies lie on the water. The middle right of the canvas is taken up with a reflection of a willow tree, whose green and yellow branches wave in vertical stripes. When paintings such as "Water Lilies at Giverny" are displayed in museums, patrons are encouraged to stand quite close to the painting, so the view extends to the edge of the field of vision. Many viewers report seeing the water move, or becoming lost in the water and momentarily confused about which way is up and which is down. This is the effect of masterful painting by Monet. Practice does make perfect.
