Viva la vida

by Frida Kahlo

Love it or Your Money Back

Viva la vida - Description

Mexican folk artist and Surrealist Frida Kahlo painted Viva la Vita in the year 1954. It is a work of oil on masonite measuring fifty-nine by fifty and seven tenths centimeters. Viva la Vita depicts a still life of watermelons against a blue sky. The watermelons are sliced open and cut in various shapes and wedges. The true magic of this piece and the reason behind its power can be seen in the title, “long live life” which is inscribed in the very flesh of the watermelon. It is indicative of Kahlo’s triumph over her tragic life, living long enough to establish herself as a world renowned artist. Her name will forever be etched into an impossible material. Watermelon rots and returns to the earth, but on canvas it is a testament to Kahlo’s ability to survive the impossible. As a survivor of disease, injury, miscarriage and turbulent marriage the etching on the watermelon is Kahlo’s victory. It is positioned in the foreground of the painting where Kahlo sat positioned in so many of her self portraits. It is proud, unmoving, directly in the face of whoever should look at it. Viva la Vita is a reminder to all who should gaze on it of the power that life has over death and the extraordinary ability that humans have to overcome turmoil and establish themselves as an unmovable force in a world that constantly pushes and pulls.
