The Pink Nude - Description

Henri Matisse painted "The Pink Nude" in 1935. One year later, the painting was purchased by Etta Cone, one of Matisse's biggest fans and greatest collectors. Matisse sent multiple photographs of the painting while it was in progress to Ms. Cone, hoping to entice her to buy it. The photographs also allow the modern viewer to get a glimpse into the workings of the artist as he painted. "The Pink Nude" began as a fairly realistic portrait of a nude figure on a couch, with a vase of flowers behind her. Over successive drafts, the nude became flatter and more abstract. Her head became smaller and her limbs became elongated and curved. The vase of flowers became a fleshy, circular blob that hangs over her. The crosshatching of the tiles on the floor contrasts with her curving, weaving limbs. Matisse wrote, "I try to condense the meaning of this body by drawing its essential lines. The charm will then become less apparent at first glance, but in the long run it will begin to emanate from the new image. The image at the same time will be enriched by a wider meaning, a more comprehensively human one …” (source: http://www.andrewgrahamdixon.com/archive/readArticle/185). "The Pink Nude" shows Matisse beginning to experiment with complete abstraction of the human form, and Ms. Cone's purchase of the painting rewarded his experimentation.
