Vincent Van Gogh loved to paint at night. The bright stars and moon, contrasted with the black of the sky and shadowy figures below, appealed directly to his sense of color and his abiding love of contrast. This night scene, Starlight Over the Rhone, 1888, painted from a quay on the east side of the Rhone, shows two lovers walking along the river, underneath a bright, starry sky. The lights of the building along the shore are reflected in the water, as bright, yellow streaks pointing directly at the lovers. These gas lights were a new phenomenon, and would have been mesmerizing to this painter. The texture of paint is notable here: The sky is made up of broad, horizontal bands of blue-black paint. These same horizontal bands appear in the water below. The quay is delineated by strokes of a different direction. This is significant as nearly all features in this painting, Starlight Over the Rhone, 1888 are the same color. The orientation of the strokes define where one feature ends and another begins. Vincent Van Gogh would employ these same techniques, to different effect, in his famous painting "The Starry Night," painted just a year later.
