Rocca de Secca - Description

Rocca de Secca is an oil painting created in 1858 byGerman- American Romantic painter Albert Bierstadt of the Rocky Mountain and Hudson River Schools. This piece, done in oil, was created to depict the small Italian province in central Italy. It is a larger work of art, measuring about forty seven by thirty two inches. Its Romantic purpose serves to compliment the power and size of the mountain range, thereby diminishing the humans to a menial role its base. The humans in this picture are pictured relying heavily on animals to transport them, and in comparison to the mountains they appear cumbersome in the face of such a stern precipice. Bierstadt creates a barren mountainous landscape here where natural beings, namely the trees, flourish easily in comparison to the humans who must walk at a slow and laborious pace. The inspiration in this painting is drawn from the land around them. Like many of Bierstadt’s paintings, there is no display of excess or splendor. As with mostly all of Bierstadt’s work, as evident here, the point of view is at a distance from the subjects so as to create a feeling of watching from afar. From this angle the mountains are shown in all of their might, dwarfing all who approach. Even the human colony the foot to where the humans ascend appears menial when placed in the context of such an awesome scene.
