Rhythm of Black Lines

Rhythm of Black Lines - Description

"Rhythm of Black Lines" by Piet Mondrian was likely begun during the artist's time in Paris and completed years later, during the artist's time in New York. Mondrian was well known to tinker and play with his paintings, working for the perfect balance of line, color and white space. "Rhythm of Black Lines" showcases the artist's use of a geometric grid. Lines extend to the very edge of the canvas. On the very edge of the canvas to the right, a tiny stripe of red is shown, giving the viewer the impression that we are only seeing a small window of a much larger image. The artists' signature is contained in the bottom lines of the grid, in red paint, to the right of the image. The bold, bright primary colors are restrained in "Rhythm of Black Lines." The bright yellow, totally encased in black and surrounded by white, seems to shimmer and glow, while the bright blue in the upper left provides a serene place to rest your eyes. The white squares of the canvas are rendered in multiple layers of white paint, with brush strokes running in different directions. This provides a depth of field not apparent in printed versions of the image. "Rhythm of Black Lines" is a minimalist painting of discipline, line and restraint, showing Mondrian at the height of his power.
