Regatta at Argenteuil, 1874 - Description

Claude Monet was a determined, methodical painter. As he once wrote, " I waited for the idea to consolidate, for the grouping and composition of themes to settle themselves in my brain. When I felt I had enough cards I determined to pass to action, and did so" (source: This determination and planning would have been familiar to the sail boat racers of the regatta. Monet would paint the regatta multiple times during his painting career, trying to capture the interplay of sails, water and spectators. In "Regatta at Argenteuil" (which is also sometimes called "The Boats"), the viewer is standing on the far shore, watching the boats approaching. The color palette used here is limited to blues and whites, allowing shapes to bend into one another. The sky above is cloudy, shot through with white clouds that appear to glow with light. The ships cluster below, some with sails so large that they nearly extend off the top of the canvas. This sky and the sails are reflected in the water below, but this water is so choppy that the reflections are bent and blurred. The water and the sky contain horizontal strokes nearly exclusively. Houses cluster in the left of the image, their red roofs contrasting with the blue of the canvas. "Regatta at Argenteuil" is full of movement and excitement.
