Nympheas

Nympheas - Description

Claude Monet once said, "It took me time to understand my water lilies. I had planted them for the pleasure of it; I grew them without ever thinking of painting them." Monet would undergo a deep study of water lilies, painting approximately 250 of these paintings during his lifetime. The artist rarely gave the paintings unique names, calling the all "nympheas" or "water lilies." This can make tracking particular paintings difficult. But while Monet was not a terrific record keeper, he was a talented water lilly painter. The paintings in this series are beloved and well known. In this painting "Nympheas," Monet tries a slightly different style. Rather than painting in true Impressionist style of quick dashes of contrasting color placed side-by-side, the artist uses a more free, abstract style. Lilly pads are painted in round swirls of blended blue and green, with black highlights. Bright pink flowers dot the centers of the lilly pads. The center of the painting is taken up with a reflection of the cloudy sky in the deep blue water. The edges of this painting show weeping willow tree branches, dipping down to the water. Since we cannot see the tree itself, these branches can be disorienting on first glace. It's hard to tell which way is up. "Nympheas" shows Monet trying on a new style in a free and playful way.
