Haystack at Giverny, 1886 - Description

Claude Monet was an accomplished landscape painter. He enjoyed getting up early, taking a walk, and looking for scenes and subjects that were inspiring enough to motivate him to paint. In "Haystack at Giverny" we see an example of a kernel of an idea that had not yet taken root. Here, we are shown a beautiful landscape near the artist's home. Small cottages are in the center of the image; the yellow of the stucco contrasting with the deep brown of the roofs. Tall, green trees seem to wave in the breeze in the background, blending into the blue hills in the background, which lighten to become the blue of the sky. The center of the painting is taken up with a large horizontal stripe of an orange field, painted in deep, horizontal brushstrokes. A band of green grass comes next, contrasting beautifully with the orange of the field. Right in front is a lone stack of grain, painted in circular strokes. Four years later, Monet would become obsessed with stacks of grain such as this, and would paint them over 25 times. The paintings in that series show haystacks and nothing more. But in "Haystack at Giverny," the viewer is treated to a beautiful impressionist sky, a field of flowers, and a town below in an image full of color, contrast and light.
