Gold Fish

Gold Fish - Description

Goldfish was created by French artist Henri Matisse in the year 1912. It is a work of oil on canvas. Matisse, a modernist was most renowned for his work as a Fauvist. The Fauves, or “wild beasts” as they came to be termed, were given this name for their loose application of paint and stretched forms. They are celebrated most for their use of lucid color and coarse brush strokes. Notice the richness of color held by the goldfish as they mill about their small tank. The tank is situated in the very middle of the painting, the visual center. It is only proper that the fish for whom the painting is named after should be given full attention. Complimentary colors swirl about the glass tank and compliment the brightness given off by the three fish. Colors do not clash with each other but instead play off of each other in a way that causes each to pop off of the canvas. The subtle insertion of white between green and pink forms also helps this to occur. It is a visual strategy used by many artists to enhance color. This painting does not rely heavily on lines, nor does it need to for the way that colors are situated next to each other neatly rather than through gradation. Matisse, instead of blending, offers each color its space to breath individually in his composition.
