Garden Path at Giverny

Garden Path at Giverny - Description

Claude Monet loved to work with sun-dappled landscapes. The artist was famously in love with color, once saying, "Color is my day-long obsession, joy and torment," (source: ttp:// Landscapes in bright sunlight and deep shade allowed him to explore colors with deep intensity. Colors look different in bright sunlight than they do in the shade. In "Garden Path at Giverny" we see this technique to great effect. The viewer is standing in the middle of a wide garden path, half in shadow and half in light. The path is rendered in horizontal strokes of taupe, yellow and white, right next to deep, shadowy strokes of black, blue and brown. The path is lined with an explosion of flowering shrubs, again half in shadow and half in light. They are painted quickly, using a deep paint. The brushstrokes are clearly seen. Overhead, a canopy of trees covers the path. Branches are painted in downward strokes of deep paint in green, yellow and red. At the end of the path, we can see the doorway of a house, and stairs leading up. "Garden Path at Giverny" is an exploration of color, of light and dark, and of Impressionist techniques beautifully put to the test.
