Fenetre a Tahiti

by Henri Matisse

Love it or Your Money Back

Fenetre a Tahiti - Description

Like many artists of his time, Henri Matisse was an admirer of exotic, native art. He appreciated the innovative use of color, and the prominence of abstraction, in the art from Asia and Africa. Matisse began by collecting this art, and then moved to incorporating some aspects of that art into his own work. "Fenetre a Tahiti" is a wonderful expression of that tendency. The painting is framed by a painted scarlet border, dotted with white flowers. The flowers are painted quickly, but are outlined in black. A curtain ruffles in the breeze in the top left of the painting. A small border of posts lines the bottom of the image. These posts are, again, rendered quickly and crudely, as they do not all match and they are not perfectly in line. In the center of the painting, a strip of blue ocean cuts across the canvas. A perfectly rendered, detailed yellow boat sits on the dock, nearly bridging the distance between the two red shores. The viewer of "Fenetre a Tahiti" appears to be in a windowed room, looking out on this scene. Step back far enough, and the border could be a border to the window itself. "Fenetre a Tahiti" shows Matisse working within an ethnic tradition in a playful, colorful, vibrant way.
