Canal in Amsterdam

Canal in Amsterdam - Description

Impressionists believed in color. They did not mix colors to make a smooth palette to paint with. Contrasting paints were placed side by side, mixed within the eye of the viewer. Claude Monet, as one of the founders of this movement, was an expert. In "Canal in Amsterdam," you can see the artist's skill. The sky is made up of multiple dashes of paint in white, blue and taupe, blending together to suggest an overcast day. A blue tower pierces that sky, painted quickly in multiple colors of blue and white, with no black outline to distinguish it from the sky. Only the contrast of the deep blue of the tower pulls it from the lighter blue of the sky. The lane below is dotted with trees, beautifully rendered with quick brush strokes of olive and green. Buildings appear on the edges of the painting, in shades of yellow. One bright square of red appears in the middle of the painting, near the top of one building. Impressionist painters were concerned with landscapes over human figures, so few people are present in "Canal in Amsterdam." Those that do appear are merely suggested in black paint, rather than being painted in accurate detail. In "Canal in Amsterdam," Monet is concerned with capturing light, contrasts, and the interplay. The viewer can sense him painting quickly, documenting the scene, before it is gone.
