Bouquet of Sunflowers

Bouquet of Sunflowers - Description

In 1881, Claude Monet was recovering from the death of his wife. The grief-stricken painter was poor -- too poor to afford models or trips to exotic locations -- so he began painting still-life images of flowers from his garden. He submitted six floral still lifes in the seventh Impressionist exhibition. These became some of his most beloved paintings. In "Bouquet of Sunflowers," Monet allows his interest in color and contrast to have free expression. The background is rendered in deep turquoise color, lightening to white in the lower left of the image. The yellow of the sunflowers pop clearly from this deep background, and the shock of the yellow petals is further contrasted with the black of the inside of the flowers. Sunflowers wilt extremely quickly once picked, so Monet would have painting this image quickly. He manages to show the passage of time in this painting due to the wilting: The flowers near the top of the image appear freshly picked and erect, while the flowers near the opening of the vase appear wilted and downcast. The vase rests on a tablecloth of green, with a red square highlighting the vase. The green of the tablecloth is picked up in the green of the leaves, but the red is unique and serves to contrast with the blue and yellow appearing above. "Bouquet of Sunflowers" is a bright and joyful still life, in a true Impressionist style.
