Bordighera

Bordighera - Description

While he did enjoy the comforts of home, family and garden, Claude Monet also enjoyed traveling. Different locations have different plants, different types of architecture and the light can appear slightly different. Monet found this very inspirational, and would travel repeatedly, as long as his health allowed. The Italian town of Bordighera would be inspirational for Monet: He would paint the sea and the olive trees repeatedly during his stay there. In this painting simply titled "Bordighera," the viewer seems to be standing on the edge of a cliff, covered with gnarled olive trees and low hedges. The trees wind their way to the sky in the center of the painting, nearly blocking the view below. These organic, undulating shapes are a bit of a departure for Monet, who often worked within a straight grid of trees reaching upward and a horizon splitting the canvas horizontally. The stone buildings of the town are visible in the center of the canvas, painted quickly with daubs of white, yellow and tan. The sea, speckled with small, white boats, is painted in deep blue, horizontal strokes of paint. The sky is a bright blue, completely cloudless. "Bordighera" is a showcase of Monet's brushwork. Multiple types of brushstrokes are shown here, including circular strokes, straight horizontal strokes, vertical highlights and straight washes of color.
