Bassin d'Argenteuil, 1872 - Description

Claude Monet lived in Argenteuil for 7 years. During that time, Argenteuil became an important sailing town, as a sailing club moved its headquarters from Paris to this smaller location. Monet would become very interested in painting the boats, their sails and their reflections in the water below. "Le Bassin d'Argenteuil" is dominated by a huge blue sky, dappled with clouds. This sky takes up well over half of the canvas. The left of the image shows a line of trees marching to the back of the image, to the vanishing point. The light source for the painting is located behind the trees, which allows Monet to paint their shadows streaming out to the grass below. Several figures stand on the path, but their features are unclear. The viewer is standing on this same path, as though he or she were walking toward the figures standing there. The bottom of the canvas is taken over with lush, bright green fields. These, too, are dappled and streaked with the sunlight streaming through the line of trees. The center of the image contains the river, dotted with sailboats. Industrial boats are shown too, with smoke from the smokestacks adding to the cloudy sky above. " Le Bassin d'Argenteuil " was painted at the height of the Impressionist movement, and claims color, light and emotion as its dominant characteristics.
