Artist's Garden at Giverny

Artist's Garden at Giverny - Description

Claude Monet was an avid gardener. His move to Giverny in 1883 allowed him to cultivate and expand upon this love. The artist bought land surrounding his cottage, planned an extensive garden, and hired gardeners to help him achieve his vision. This was an excellent investment, as the gardens around his home would provide inspiration and source materials for hundreds of paintings. In "The Artist's Garden at Giverny," the viewer appears to be walking down a garden path, surrounded on either side with iris. The fields of flowers are painted lovingly, some in shadow and some in light. Trees hover above, in brown, green and yellow. Impressionist painters did not believe in blending and mixing paint, and achieved their distinctive style by painting contrasting colors in stripes right next to each other, and letting the colors mix in the viewer's eye. This technique is quite evident in "The Artist's Garden at Giverny," as the bright red of the ground is painted right next to the bright green of the leaves. The trees are made up of multiple colors: dark brown strokes are next to bright carmine highlight strokes and bright green leaf strokes. The overall affect is quite lively: There are many colors to see and absorb, all pulling together to a unified whole, showing the painter's love of his garden and his flowers.
