Antibes, Afternoon Effect - Description

Antibes is a resort town in the Mediterranean, in the south of France. It was an important trading post for the Roman Empire, and many artifacts from that time period are easily seen today. The city was built right on the edge of the water, and appears to rise directly from the water and rocks in a tumble of stone and stucco buildings. The city looks much the same today as it did in 1888, when Claude Monet painted "Antibes, Afternoon Effect." In this painting, the viewer appears to be standing in the middle of a choppy sea of blue and green. Contrasting strokes of blue are placed directly next to strokes of green, giving the water the illusion of movement and depth. The sea stretches to the middle of the canvas, where the rocks make up the shore and the city rises from the rocks in multiple layers of yellow and orange. The stone and stucco of the buildings appear to catch the light from the fading sun. The sun has already left the right side of the canvas, as the sea is darker there. Mountains bisect the painting, rising in blues and yellows. Small boats are visible in the distance. In "Antibes, Afternoon Effect," Monet manages to capture the moment right before the sun sets and plunges the city in darkness.
